Chapter 10

A few weeks later, Julia jogged to the tennis court net. She leaned forward, knees bent, her body in the volley position. Her baseball cap shaded her face from the Saturday-afternoon sun. In the previous point, Sean had served a perfect ace deep into the backhand court, putting them in the lead in this game.

Her body pulsed with energy and anticipation of their imminent victory. They were playing in the semifinal of her interchurch competition, and had blitzed all the teams in the first round with the exception of Liam and Sally.

Julia held up her racquet, waiting for Sean to serve. Liam and Sally had beaten them in their first-round match and were playing their semifinal on the next court.

Sean’s serve landed in the forehand court. Julia stayed at the net, smashing a winner into the far corner of the doubles court.

“Great shot.” Sean gave her a high five on his way back to the baseline.

Her mouth curved into a wide smile, and she repositioned at the net for the next point. They were playing the best of four games, and were ahead two games to one. If Sean held his service game, they’d be through to the final.

Sean’s serve flew past her, scoring an ace down the center of the court. She saluted him, glancing over at the adjoining court. Liam and Sally shared a victory hug.

Frowning, she switched her attention back to her game. They were one point away from winning and competing against Liam and Sally in the final.

Sean sliced his serve wide into the backhand court. The receiver returned a soft shot to Julia. She volleyed the ball deep in the opposite corner, and their other opponent lobbed it back over the net. Julia let the ball bounce before hitting the winning shot down the line.

She raised her fist in victory, her heart rate accelerating. Sean jogged toward her, embracing her in a brief hug before they shook hands with their opponents.

She grinned, walking with Sean to the sidelines. “We made it through. I’m so excited to play in the final.”

He nodded. “It’s going to be a tough match, and we’ll have to play a full set.”

“Are you up for the challenge?”

“Yeah.” He lowered his voice. “Our opponents in the final. Are they the couple who met with Simon just before my interview?”

“I’d wondered if you’d recognized Liam and Sally.”

Sean grabbed his towel, wiping away the beads of sweat on his brow. “He doesn’t look happy that he’ll be playing against us.”

Liam stared at them from across the court, arms crossed over his chest.

“Oh, well, he’ll survive. He’s probably worried that he could get beaten in the final like last time.”

“Sally’s a good player. I was watching their game earlier. They play in sync.”

She nodded. “Her weakness is her net play, and her backhand isn’t as strong as her forehand.”

“You’ve been studying her play?”

“Of course. Liam has a nearly unplayable serve when he’s on his game. And powerful ground strokes. We don’t want to get stuck in any baseline rallies with him.
